Noida International Airport –Travel and Connecting India to the World

Noida International Airport, popularly known as Jewar Airport, is one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. Located in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the airport is being developed to reduce traffic pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and improve connectivity across North India.

The airport is expected to become a major hub for domestic and international travel while boosting tourism, trade, logistics, and employment opportunities in the region.

The Early Vision of Jewar Airport

The idea of building a new international airport near Noida was first proposed in the early 2000s. As Delhi NCR rapidly expanded and air traffic increased every year, the need for an additional airport became essential.

Initially, several locations were considered for the project. Eventually, Jewar in Greater Noida was selected because of its strategic location, large land availability, and excellent connectivity to Delhi, Noida, Agra, Mathura, and western Uttar Pradesh.

However, the project faced multiple delays due to:

  • Land acquisition challenges
  • Environmental clearances
  • Policy approvals
  • Coordination between state and central authorities

Despite these obstacles, the Uttar Pradesh government continued pushing the project forward because of its long-term economic importance.

Official Approval & Major Milestones

A major breakthrough came in 2017 when the Government of Uttar Pradesh accelerated the development process. In 2018, the Government of India officially granted approval for the airport project.

Some important milestones include:

2019 – Project Tender Process- Global airport operators participated in the bidding process. Zurich Airport International AG won the bid to develop and operate the airport.
2020 – Foundation & Planning- Detailed planning, land acquisition, and infrastructure development began. The airport was officially named Noida International Airport.
2021 – Construction Begins-  Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the airport project, marking the beginning of large-scale construction work.
Future Expansion Plans

The airport is planned in multiple phases and is expected to become one of Asia’s largest airports after full completion. The future vision includes:
